Restore Your Smile with Dental Implant Surgery

Whether you have a single missing tooth or are completely edentulous (toothless), we offer a full array of dental implant solutions to restore the function and beauty of your smile. For dental implant surgery, most of our patients receive IV sedation in addition to a local anesthetic. After sedation has taken effect, Dr. Painter makes small incisions in your gum tissue in predetermined locations, then surgically places the titanium implants into your jawbone.

Over the next three to six months, the implants fuse with your underlying bone in a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, we’ll attach the abutments to the implants, then secure your custom crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment for a restored smile that looks, feels, and functions like your natural teeth!

Our Oral Surgery Treatments

When a tooth is too severely decayed, infected, or fractured to save, tooth extraction is typically the best solution for preventing severe pain and the spread of an active infection. Tooth extraction is a common oral surgery procedure before getting full mouth dental implants. The area is numbed during a tooth extraction at Sedation & Implant Dentistry, then Dr. Painter uses a specialized instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth, followed by forceps to remove it from its socket.

For surgical tooth extractions in Fort Wayne, IN, and Auburn, IN, it may be necessary to make a small incision in your gum tissue and remove the tooth in several pieces, especially if it’s impacted. After an extraction, you’ll receive detailed postoperative care instructions that you must follow to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Usually, teeth and their roots stimulate your jawbone to keep it healthy. After you lose a tooth, the surrounding bone progressively loses volume until it’s completely resorbed. If you’re preparing to receive dental implants to replace missing teeth, it’s essential to have adequate bone to support the implant posts.

You may also need a grafting procedure if you’ve incurred bone loss due to a dental infection, tooth fracture, periodontal disease, or traumatic injury. Bone grafting (also called ridge augmentation) is performed to fill in eroded areas with bone harvested from your body or a donor source. Over a few months, the new bone integrates with your jawbone, enabling dental implants to be securely placed.

The maxillary sinuses behind your cheeks and on top of your upper teeth are empty, air-filled spaces. Some of the roots of your natural upper teeth extend into your sinuses. When these teeth are removed, only a thin wall of bone separates your sinuses from your mouth, resulting in adequate bone to place dental implants. A sinus lift is a common bone grafting procedure for patients with bone loss in their upper jaws.

Under sedation, a small incision is made in the premolar or molar gum region to expose your bone. A small opening is cut into the bone, the membrane lining the sinus is pushed upward, and then the space is filled with bone grafting material. After several months of healing and integrating the new bone growth, dental implants can be surgically placed in the newly formed sinus bone.
